The flame sensor is a regulatory sensor that will sense the acceptable flame upon ignition. As you could guess, if the sensor generated a error everything remains shut off until the problem is dealt with.

General warnings to watch for in a failing flame sensor

The furnace kicks in sporadically barely
The gas has difficulty trying to start an ignition sequence and the control shows an error
The heat system cannot begin working and completely shuts down
