A flame sensor can only be found on furnaces that burn a gas. It is a safety sensor that can reliably detect the exact flame when the system starts. As with most safety features, if the flame sensor gets set off everything remains shut off until the problem is dealt with.
Clues to watch for to know the primary flame sensor is dead
- The entire heating system will operate intermittently when it feels like it
- The gas supplying the furnace refuses to ignite and closes down
- Your furnace is unwilling to even begin to start when the thermostat kicks in
