The defrost sensor control board determines when to initiate the defrost cycle which may be necessary to keep your outdoor unit from plugging up. The control board is relayed information from a sensor located in the outdoor unit to determine when the defrost cycle should begin.

Major warnings of an unhealthy defrost board

The defrost sequence never begins even though there is quite a bit frost that needs to be removed
Your main control board may throw an error code if the defrost control board fails
The system will not run at all because of the frost blocking the flow of air
