Every air conditioning system contains an expansion valve that allows the refrigerant to spread back into gaseous form from a high-pressure liquid form. The AC in a split system would produce no cooled air when lacking a functioning expansion valve.
Red flags of a deteriorating expansion valve
- AC takes too long to comfortably keep things cool
- The cooled air is not cold enough as it ought to be so as to feel comfortable in the house
