The flame sensor is only found on gas furnaces. It is a sensor that will consistently detect the precise flame when igniting the system. As with most devices used for safety reason, if the flame sensor senses a problem everything stops for as long as the problem remains.
Elements to watch for in a bad safety flame sensor
- The gas entering the furnace has difficulty trying to burn and some type of error flashes on the main board
- The entire heating system kicks in sporadically at the stroke of midnight after the second full moon following the second Sunday of the month
- Your
system is unable to begin operations and shuts down
