A flame sensor is only found on gas furnaces. It is a sensor that will sense the flame while the system is starting. As with any other safety sensor, if the flame sensor senses a problem everything stops until obstacle is corrected.
Major indications of a defective safety flame sensor
- The furnace refuses to generate heat when the thermostat kicks in
- HVAC system starts on certain occasions at midnight, but only after the new moon following the fourth Monday of the month
