The limit switch contains a sensor in the heat exchanger that senses, or governs, when the heated air is actually warm enough to activate the main blower. The reason limit switches exist is because if the air is too cool inside the furnace to begin with, the you will lose heat in the ducts and the vents will just blow cool air.
Major indications of a failing main limit switch
- The heating and cooling system will not initiate or run well like it is supposed to
- The HVAC system begins to shut down unexpectedly occasionally
