In an HVAC system, a thermistor is a special kind of new age resistor that has a varied resistance that is contingent on the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. The furnace or AC reads the temperature in some specific areas of the system to do its job as it should. They tell the heating and cooling system when a certain temperature has been reached.
