The flame sensor can only be found on furnaces that burn a gas. It is a safety sensor that will dependably sense the acceptable flame while the system is starting. As you would probably could have guessed, if the flame sensor is triggered the gas valve is shut off and the system halts until the problem is remedied and the system is reset.
