A flame sensor can only be found on furnaces that burn a gas. It is a safety sensor that can sense the correct flame upon ignition. As with most safety features, if the flame sensor is triggered everything comes to a halt until the problem is fixed.
Major symptoms of a failing safety flame sensor
- The gas refuses to properly ignite and shuts itself off
- System will kind of run occasionally at midnight, but only after the new moon following the fourth Monday of the month
- The furnace is unable to supply heat at all
