A flame sensor is a safety device that senses the acceptable flame in accordance with the initial ignition sequence. As with any other safety sensor, if the flame sensor senses a problem the gas valve is shut off and the system halts until obstacle is corrected.
Red flags of an inadequate primary flame sensor
- The furnace refuses to work when you crank the thermostat up
- The whole system works sporadically whenever it pleases
- LP or natural gas will not begin an ignition sequence and the control shows an error
