A flame sensor is only found on gas furnaces. It is a sensor that can reliably detect the acceptable flame upon ignition. For obvious reasons, if the sensor goes off the whole HVAC system will remain stopped until that particular problem is fixed.
Symptoms of a barely functioning primary flame sensor
- Any type of gas that has entered the furnace has difficulty trying to start an ignition sequence and the system throws an error code
- The unit will sometimes work rarely when it feels like it
- The heating system cannot start operating and spits out an error code on the main board
