The flame sensor is only found on gas furnaces. It is a sensor that will dependably sense the exact flame when igniting the system. For obvious reasons, when the flame sensor gets triggered by something the whole HVAC system will remain stopped for as long as it takes to remedy the problem.

How can I tell if my safety flame sensor is in need of replacing?

The heating system will run occasionally when the time is right
The heat system is unwilling to start and shows an error code on the board
The gas supplying the furnace will not even try to start an ignition sequence and the main board displays on error code
