The main blower wheel is usually finned and is spun around by a motor to generate airflow throughout a house. It is also referred to as a squirrel cage due to the understandable alikeness to that of a wheel that a pet hamster may use for exercise. Regardless of what you call it, it is definitely an important part of a heating and cooling system that needs proper air pressure within the ductwork.
Cues of a faulty blower wheel
- A scraping sound heard while the system ramps up
- You may sense lower than normal air coming from the blower
- If a piece of the cage has been dented and it does not spin correctly
