In an HVAC system, a thermistor is a specific kind of resistor whose resistance will fluctuate depending on the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. They inform the system control board when the temperature in increasing or decreasing. The main control board interprets the temperature in several different areas to be sure everything is going well.
Signals to watch for in a bad thermister
- Blower motor could possibly fail to begin to ramp up the airflow
- The AC and heat system could possibly not even begin because of any thermistor that is damaged
