Limit switches are crucial because if the air never warms up the you will lose all the heat as the air flows through the ducts. A normal limit switch contains a sensor in the air handler that can determine when the heated air is actually warm enough so that it may be pushed through the ducts and out the vents.
Key symptoms to watch for in a bad limit type switch
- The heating and AC system refuses to start or continue to run even though the desired temperature has not been attained
- The whole system is beginning to initiate and then stops time after time
