The flame sensor is only used on furnaces that burn gas and is one that senses the exact flame while the system is starting. As with any other safety sensor, if the sensor goes off the system remains completely shut down until the problem is repaired.
Indications of a faulty furnace flame sensor

system cannot work and completely shuts down - Any type of gas that has entered the furnace cannot burn and the control shows an error
