The fan motor on the compressor is responsible for cooling the compressor, when heat is removed from the house, that heat energy has to be dispersed in order to keep things cool. The unit may be replaced solely on its own, this will reduce install time and cheaper for you. It is important that the new motor has the voltage that is the same and correct amp current as on the current fan motor.
