Air Filters are available in many types and sizes, which depends on your particular choice for how clean you want the air and the specific size of filter you need for your system. It is recommended that the filter that filters out particles from your home is swapped out every 90 days or so due to the filter clogging up and restricting the flow of air through the ducts. The height, length and width of the filter is not really a personal choice due to the requirement of your furnace or handler.
