The flame sensor is one that senses the proper flame during the initial ignition of the furnace. As with most safety features, when the flame sensor gets triggered by something the furnace will not start until the problem is remedied and the system is reset.
Simple indications of a failing flame sensor
- The heat system is unwilling to even begin to start at all
- System operates on certain occasions at midnight, but only after the new moon following the fourth Monday of the month
- The gas supplying the furnace refuses to begin igniting and the whole system shuts down
