A split-system AC unit can not run if the expansion valve was totally worn out. Pretty much every air conditioning system has an expansion valve that allows the coolant to expand into its regular vapor state from a high-pressure liquid form.
Major signs of a failing AC expansion valve
- Your AC takes way too long to properly cool as it should
- The air is not as cool as you are accustomed to coming from the AC
