A flame sensor is only found on gas furnaces. It is a sensor that will sense the precise flame upon ignition. As you could guess, if the flame sensor is triggered the gas valve is shut off and the system halts until the problem is remedied and the system is reset.
Some warnings of a poorly performing safety flame sensor
- The gas entering the furnace will not even try to properly ignite and the system throws an error code
- The heating system kicks in infrequently whenever it pleases
- The gas furnace is unwilling to supply heat and produces an error code on the circuit board
