The reason limit switches exist is due to the fact that if the air inside the furnace is too cool the you will lose all the heat as the air flows through the ducts. The limit switch has a sensor in the air handler that decides when the air is actually warm enough for the blower to be activated.
Important clues to watch for in a bad limit type switch
- The heating and AC system will not begin or will not stay running longer than 10 minutes
- The whole system starts to stop suddenly more often than not
