A transformer is very common in many household goods which includes your forced air system as it usually converts electricity to a different voltage, 120V to 12V, for example. When you replace one, be sure to buy one properly rated for the voltage that will be demanded by the device. Heating and cooling transformers may have specific specs and you should make yourself aware of the exact voltage needs.
General indicators that your main transformer has little life left
- Inexact volts is measured across the main transformer
- System transformer looks as if it has melted slightly or have a burning smell when it is in use
- No power calculated leaving a main transformer block while using a voltmeter
