A flame sensor is a device that will reliable sense the proper flame while the system is starting. For obvious reasons, if the flame sensor is triggered everything remains shut off until the problem is fixed.

The LP or natural gas refuses to try to begin an ignition sequence and the board throws an error
The heating system is unable to supply heat when you crank the thermostat up
