The furnace filter should filter bad things in the air and other fine particles from the furnace. The measurement proportions of the filter is not a personal choice because of the constraint of whoever designed your heating and cooling system. It is highly recommended that the filter is changed four times a year so as to maintain good airflow through the ducts.
Indications your filter has very little life left
- The main filter looks gross and replacing it would be best soon
- It is greatly advised to swap out your air filter every 90 days to help prevent mold and bacteria build-up
- When you face it toward a light, the light does not permeate to the other side of a very dirty air filter
