A very basic thermistor is a thermal resistor, whose resistance will fluctuate depending on the amount of, or lack thereof, heat. They inform the HVAC system when a certain temperature reaches a certain point. The system must know the temp in several different areas to ensure that things are as they should be.
Major warnings to watch for in a bad all-important thermister
- The heating and cooling system may never begin because of the improperly set thermistor
- Primary blower could fail in the attempt to ramp up to full speed
