A flame sensor is only used on furnaces that burn gas and is one that will reliable sense the appropriate flame when igniting the system. For obvious reasons, if the sensor get triggered the gas valve is shut off and the system halts until the problem is dealt with.
Major signs the primary flame sensor is going to die
- The unit will sometimes work sporadically at the stroke of midnight after the second full moon following the second Sunday of the month
- The main type of gas cannot ignite and shuts itself off
- The gas furnace is unable to start and will shut everything down
